Divine Success

by admin on June 10, 2011

I would sound pretty insincere if I described my definition of success during different stages of my life. At one point just putting one foot in front of the other would have sufficed, and at other times being a perfect mom, wife, and graduate student while holding down a 50+ hour a week job still didn’t meet my criteria for success.

Why is it so challenging to actually affirm our successes or to rest in achieving a goal?

Perhaps the very notion that we would describe ourselves as successful would in some weird way set us up for failure or unsuccess in the future. That is precisely why it is important to define success by God’s terms and not by that of a worldview.

So, what definition eliminates unhealthy, self-absorbed striving and allows for rest while knowing God has already defined our success?

At any point I need to check-in on my level of success, Proverbs 22:4 centers me: “The reward of humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, honor and life.”

What can be more successful that being an honorable person? Add to that a full life with a few riches tossed in here and there and well, who could define success better than God?
